SpyGlass Pharma pays $13M for Santen's intraocular lens maker AVS
SpyGlass Pharma acquired all outstanding shares of Advanced Vision Science, an ophthalmic device maker and intraocular lens manufacturer, from Santen Pharmaceutical for roughly $13 million in cash. AVS already supplies the IOL used in SpyGlass's two Phase 3 trials, and will remain Santen's exclusive IOL supplier in Japan while continuing to license lens material to Bausch + Lomb.
Why it matters: A clinical-stage company buying its own supplier is a bet that manufacturing control beats outsourcing ahead of commercialization.
